TIP = To Insure Promptness
...then discounts this as popular misunderstanding because it predates popular use of acronyms (ie contractions to initials). But is that the real reason?Surely the intention here is to ENsure promptness - we TIP, but we don't TEP.
Of course, American usage may be different but one thing is sure: tipping in whatever US jurisdiction has never ENSURED wait staff are health INSURED.
