HR vs Quality Candidates, who will win?

Many thanks for your good advice Margie!
Another point to take notice of is the part-time job posting that lists a page of full-time, skilled responsibilities along with a low rate of pay. I wouldn't go near a place like that - it sounds like slave labor! Even in a desperate economy someone with qualifications will stay away and the poor soul that gets the job will be put into a catch 22. Everyone loses including the employer with their unrealistic expectations.
Keep up the great work!

I thought I would send you a note about your recent email.
It is amazing that some people forget the goal is to find the best person for the job, not just making it easier on them.
I also find it interesting when I see job posts asking for, "leaders, top sellers, best in their field, excellent communication skills, etc", then when it gets to benefits and pay, it is listed as "competitive", which to me means average. In other words, "we want you to be the best, but will pay you as if you are average."
I always enjoy your posts.

Hi Margie,
I enjoy your weekly newsletters. Just a thought on recruiting. Not all recruiting is intended to find someone. The looking for applicants is sometimes a facade. The candidate is already identified and the recruiting process a chore to be gone through to satisfy internal or government procedures.

I believe that we are facing such an intense reluctance to follow a system that has been proven right for so many years. The fact that this gentleman who probably has “attention deficit disorder” that have plagued him by not being able to filter reasonable discrepancies first seen on resumes, is now forcing everyone, including people who have no place applying for that position in the first place. It is a Neanderthal way of wasting time of others by showing your own limitations and own disregard for people‘s feelings. Imagine sitting for hours next to a person who had to get a babysitter, take off work, or have to leave in an hour… this is inconsiderate on his part. The worst remains if ask this question: How long have been in the restaurant business? How many restaurant have you been managing? How big were they?
I am a former restaurant manager instructor, ex General Manager and I am at this time doing restaurant consulting in San Francisco. Why is that so many restaurants closing right now?
Is this the economy or simply bad and ignorant ownership?
Yours truly,
Jean Francois

Hi Margie,
Got your email and I have the other side of the issue. Not enough responses from employers seeking to fill positions. The industry is at an all time low as far as having available positions for experienced sales management and marketing professionals.
I have twenty years if industry experience, having been a wholesale distributor manager, winery supplier rep and even created my own start up wholesale distributor company. I have done everything on the sales side of this business successfully.
Now with the economy in the funk that it is currently, me and many others I know is this business cannot seem to find proper jobs that will allow us to demonstrate our skills and abilities for the benefit of a companies business goals.
I realize location sometimes is a factor and at this point in my career I would consider and even welcome an opportunity to move to wine country if getting the job depended on this to happen.
The bottom line is this I will continue to network with folks like you until I land that next perfect job.
My resume is attached.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Your posting about HR vs. quality candidates interestingly addressed an issue that I think is increasingly experienced by job seekers in the current market. I was recently asked to schedule an hour-long phone screening interview by a 26-year-old "interim HR manager" for a very well-respected national non profit organization. Her words: "It's better to do this over the phone and not waste each other's time if there isn't a good fit."
I know the organization well and was shocked that they gave the responsibility of screening candidates for an important job to someone who seemed to place her own agenda ahead of finding the best candidate for the position. What was convenient for her was disconcerting for me: long pauses on her end without explanation, causing me to keep asking "are you there?" I had to wonder how many other qualified candidates such as myself didn't make the cut because she opted to screen people over the phone rather than conduct a proper interview, ask the right questions and engage people in a meaningful conversation. Ironically, this organization is a journalism-based oral history project: with an HR protocol like that, no one gets to tell their story.

I agree with your bit about being to restrictive but on the other hand we can all be made to look impressive on paper and not so much when we show up. We for instance live by a large culinary school, job candidates who apply with chef here or chef their only to find out that in person never really held a chef's position but was a prep or ex-tern position, as hands on owners we often do not have the time for these individuals. I wish that there was a fool proof way of interviewing and hiring staff.

Typical of what I am experiencing as a job seeker. When I was on the other side of the desk I tried to treat every potential candidate like my best customer. If they did not get the job I still wanted their business. The most important thing you can do in business is find the right people. When did doing the most important thing become a burden?

Hi Margie,
Thanks for another great ezine. Makes me wonder -- is the company hiring for a position that deals with the public? When I see postings that require applying in person, I assume that means the company wants to discreetly check out the candidates to see if they have the right look. Of course, no company would admit to this ...
btw, was that you I saw a couple Saturdays ago enjoying dinner at Etoile? We've never met but I thought I recognized you from your photo.
Best,

Hi I just want to thank you for the informative article. As a job seeker, I really pay attention to how ads for job openings are written. I agree that how a company writes their ad could be looked at as how their culture is since I've passed on applying at places with ads written with attitude. :-)
Do you have past articles about how to transition into the hospitality industry? I'm interested in becoming a restaurant manager.
